Shorten and track it free →What each UTM tag means
Five tags, and you only need three.
| Tag | What it tells you | Creator example |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | Where the click came from | youtube |
| utm_medium | The kind of placement | video |
| utm_campaign | Which video, sponsor, or promo | workbench-build |
| utm_content | Which of two links in the same spot | pinned-comment |
| utm_term | Paid search keyword | (leave blank) |
Tips for creators
- Pick one spelling and stick to it. youtube and YouTube count as two different sources. That's why lowercase is on by default.
- Use one link per placement. Give the description link and the pinned-comment link different utm_content values so you can see which one people use.
- UTM data shows up in the site's analytics, not in YouTube. The page you link to (Google Analytics, Shopify, your sponsor's dashboard) reads the tags. YouTube Studio won't show them.

Do UTM tags hurt SEO?
Not on links you share in videos, emails, or social posts. Don't add them to links between pages on your own site, because that splits your own analytics.
Can I shorten a UTM link?
Yes. Long tagged links look messy in a video description. A short link on your own domain keeps the tags and is easier to read and type. See how LickityClick does it
